Tongariro Crossing

Go to the Extreme Backpackers home page

Arguably New Zealand's best one day walk through the stunning scenery of the Tongariro Park, the traverse of the stark and spectacular volcanic terrain of Mt. Tongariro is one of the most fascinating treks in the country. Among the highlights of this seven to eight hour trek are steaming vents and hot springs, old lava flows, beautiful water filled explosion craters and stunning views. On clear days you can see Mt. Taranaki in the west, Mt. Ngauruhoe, the Kaimanawa Ranges, Lake Taupo and beyond.

The mountains of Tongariro National Park are sacred to the Maori, so please tread carefully and with respect.

Winter Crossing

Tens of thousands of people walk the Tongariro Crossing in summer, but only a few are lucky enough to experience the beauty of the crossing in winter.

Extreme Backpackers does not run a guided trip. Instead, we provide transport and gear such as crampons, an ice axe and a walking pole, as well as any extra clothing and equipment you don't have. An experienced mountaineer will also accompany you in order check weather conditions as well as provide basic instruction on crampon and ice axe use, but is not responsible for guiding the walking party across the mountain.

COST:
The price of the winter crossing is $135 per person. This covers transport to and from the mountain, winter equipment (crampons and ice axes) and safety equipment. Hiking boots may be hired at an additional $25.

BOOKINGS:
For more information or to book your Winter Tongariro Crossing Experience see the crew at Extreme Backpackers or call on 07 386 8949. Other contact information can be found HERE

The trip is subject to numbers, weather and other factors, so bookings are essential. Please note that there will be a full refund given in the event that the trip is cancelled prior to the start of the walk.

Why Extreme Backpackers?

Extreme Backpackers Shuttle Bus

Extreme Backpackers specialises in the crossing in both summer and winter, with crampons and ice-axe available for hire as needed. We have our own shuttle bus, up to date weather reports and information.

Being so close to the crossing (closest hostel to the end point of the crossing) we can make last minute decisions, which are vital in an area prone to quick weather changes. As they say, "Come to New Zealand and experience four seasons in one day!"

The Route

These maps show you the route taken, from Mangatepopo up through Soda Springs and the Southern Crater to the highest point at the Red Crater. From there a quick descent down to the Emerald Lakes, across the Central Crater, then a short climb to the Blue Lake. From here it's downhill all the way, but only in terrain, as you continue to take in the stunning scenery at all points of this crossing.

Maps are courtesy of the Department of Conservation, Tonagariro/Taupo Conservancy.

Northern Circuit

If you think the Tongariro Crossing looks a bit too easy...

Winding its way over Mt. Tongariro and around Mt. Ngauruhoe (see picture) is the Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of the great walks of New Zealand. This walk passes through stunning land formation which include volcanic craters and glacial valleys. The full Northern Circuit walk takes three to four days to complete.

The most popular time of year for this walk is summer, December through to March. Within these months the track is clear of snow and the weather is less severe. In the winter months experience with ice axes and crampons is needed for this totally alpine trip. But with adequate clothing, equipment and experience, people can visit and enjoy the area this time of year.

Extreme Backpackers specialises in the Northern Circuit at all times of the year.
